Welcome to the Molecular & Environmental Toxicology Center!
The Molecular and Environmental Toxicology Center (METC) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison was formed in 1970 when a small group of dedicated faculty sought to generate an interdisciplinary training program in environmental toxicology with emphasis on hazardous synthetic chemicals in our environment. Today, toxicology research topics in the program include molecular topics such as chemical carcinogenesis, cell signaling, and chemical detoxicfication and environmental topics such as ecotoxicology of pollutants, insecticide resistance, and pollutant uptake in plants. Our diverse community of high-caliber students, faculty members, and facilities allow for this interdisciplinary research to be successfully conducted.
Our objective is to train the next generation of leaders in the science of environmental health, as members of our country’s basic research infrastructure, or as members of the regulatory or industrial communities that influence issues related to environmental toxicology.
Mission Statement:
The Molecular & Environmental Toxicology Center seeks to promote research at UW-Madison and the UW System that addresses fundamental mechanisms through which toxicants produce adverse effects, provide ways to assess or predict the impact of these agents on humans and other species, and develop biological and physicochemical processes that can control releases or deplete the environment of these harmful agents.
Commitment to Diversity:
Program diversity is strongly valued by this program. Our Summer Program, as well as strong ties with partner schools and the campus SciMed-GRS Program, has enabled us to build a diverse learning community in which nearly 1/3 of our current student population is from underrepresented populations.
Commitment to Students:
Whether scholastic, lab-related, or personal, if you are having issues, the Program Director and Program Administrator WANT to hear from you. We will work with you to identify solutions and develop plans to assist. We want to celebrate the triumphs and help in the low times. Let us help you.
