MET alum Dr. Jordan Sand (PHD ’10, Verma Lab) spoke with MET program manager Ezra Mauk to discuss his career journey and some exciting new projects that he is working on. After graduating from MET, Dr. Sand worked as a postdoc in the lab of Dr. Mark Cook, assisting on on a number of research projects which investigated strategies for improving disease resistance and overall gut health in poultry. In partnership with Dr. Cook, he co-founded the company Ab E Discovery, where he served as Chief Technology Officer and continued working to address scientific concerns related to animal health through health feed ingredient development. Most recently, Dr. Sand created his own company called Cold Water Technologies, which develops products to alleviate common pet health concerns. One of their new products, Happy Scratch, treats itchiness related to allergies and dermatitis in cats and dogs by targeting genetic deficiencies. Another product Cold Water Technologies is currently working on seeks to address recurring vomiting and diarrhea related to inflammatory bowel syndrome in cats. If pets could talk, they would surely be thanking Dr. Sand for his efforts to improve their wellbeing through innovative science!
